The new study published in the journal Heart, where researchers found that cannabis use is linked to a doubled risk of dying from cardiovascular disease, a 29% higher risk for acute coronary syndrome and 20% higher risk for stroke.

The research pooled medical information from 200 million people mostly between the ages of 19 and 59 over a seven year period.

Marijuana use has been on the rise with recreational marijuana now legal in 24 states. As younger generations enter adulthood the preference for Marijuana over alcohol has shifted. For instance, a survey done in 2022 by a cannabis research firm says that 69% of people aged 18 to 24 prefer marijuana to alcohol.

Dr. Lynn Silver of the Public Health Institute and Stanton Glantz, emeritus professor of the University of California at San Francisco, had an editorial note included in the study.

It calls for the drug to “be treated like tobacco: not criminalized but discouraged.” Another question was whether or not the risks are only limited to inhaled products.
