FULTON, Ill. – Gold Leaf Bakery & Dispensary owner Jaysen Dyal was presented with a framed first dollar of profit before a ribbon-cutting ceremony held last week signifying the grand opening of the business at 1016 Fourth St. in downtown Fulton.

Dyal’s desire with the cannabis-infused bakery and dispensary is to “offer a completely refreshing angle to cannabis that isn’t in this area at all.”

Dyal, himself, is from a small town in the East Bay of California. It was his wife who helped to expose him to the rest of the country.

“I ventured out to the Midwest where I don’t know if I would have otherwise,” Dyal says.

Having previously worked in the corporate world for his entire life up to this point, this is Dyal’s first time owning a business. It occupies the modest space last inhabited by Krumpets’ “Gold Room.”

The concept had been in the works for over a year.

“Honestly, something I don’t see eye-to-eye with in the industry is the ‘stoner’ look or the reputation of ‘potheads’ and such,” Dyal says. “I think it’s changing, and we want to be more on the forefront of that change of where we’re bringing a different flavor to the cannabis industry.”

The movement to make cannabis available as a medicine began in 1996 when California first passed medicinal cannabis legislation. Since then, numerous other states and the District of Columbia have legalized the medical use of cannabis, including Illinois in 2014.

Five years later, Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker signed a bill allowing as of Jan. 1, 2020, for adults to legally purchase cannabis for recreational use from licensed dispensaries across the state, though within possession limits.

A complex plant, cannabis contains about 540 chemical compounds, including more than 100 cannabinoids. The most well-known of these, abbreviated THC and CBD, are viewed as naturally-occurring alternatives to opiates and other pharmaceuticals.

The National Institutes of Health in 2017 concluded that THC and CBD both do effectively treat chronic pain in adults, although they continue to undergo evaluation by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

“We’re already looking to engage in partnerships with nearby health clinics to see what we can do to help provide some discounted goods there,” Dyal says. “The cannabis industry is one of the most creative industries.”

Gold Leaf Bakery & Dispensary offers something for the customer who is a first-timer as well as the experienced customer, covering a range of amounts of THC in each product.

Baked fresh in-house, cupcakes, mini-cupcakes, cookies, muffins and brownies contain as little as four milligrams of THC up to 20 for $18 or less.

Tinctures include coffee drinks and non-alcoholic beverages with a beer taste. Starting at five milligrams of THC, at $12 each, one option tastes like a lager, another is a citrus-y IPA, and another is a “Mexican lager” with lime and the spiciness of cayenne pepper.

The usual dispensary items are offered as well, such as pre-rolls and gummies, including those that are stronger, known as Nerd Rocks.

“We source products from a very reputable supplier. We were careful in choosing who we were going to source our products from,” Dyal says. “We’re not looking to cut corners on the product quality side [or] the safety side as well.”

Dyal plans to possibly add products like more-regulated vapes that are on the market and have undergone adequate testing, depending on the feedback to come from customers.

But, most of all, he hopes this new venture will uplift the downtown Fulton area and looks forward to the “high times ahead.”

Gold Leaf Bakery & Dispensary is open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
