A four-year-old Drummondville boy spent a day in an emergency department after a reported cannabis poisoning that his family links to Halloween chocolate, according to TVA Nouvelles.
In a Nov. 7 report, journalist Anaïs Desjardins wrote that the boy became ill on Thursday, Nov. 5, after eating a Kit Kat bar the family said he collected while trick-or-treating on Oct. 31.
His stepmother, Rebeka Lefebvre, told TVA that he complained about the chocolate’s taste and that she noticed a strong smell when he spoke. She then took him to hospital.
According to TVA, the Sûreté du Québec has opened an investigation into unusual characteristics of the chocolate bar.
TVA’s report does not provide test results for the chocolate or say that police have confirmed it contained cannabis. It does not establish whether anyone deliberately distributed contaminated candy.
The family said it had checked the Halloween treats for foreign objects before allowing the children to eat them. It plans to replace next year’s collected candy with treats it purchases itself.
